On 11 December 2023 the municipality of Daugavpils became the second certified Latvian ‘Authenticity‘ of the European network.
This European Cooperation Project aims to raise awareness among local policymakers, businesses and the public of the value of IP and the damage caused by counterfeiting in European cities.
During the commemorative event the Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Director of the Latvian Patent Office, Agris Batalauskis, the Council Chairman of the City of Daugavpils, Andrejs Elksniņš, and the Rector of the Daugavpils University, Arvīds Barševskis. Highlighting the fundamental role between science and education in the creation and protection of intellectual property, including industrial property.
The event took place at the Mark Rothko Museum, where the unique and authentic works of the Latvian-born abstract painter served as tangible evidence of the project motto: ‘The authentic is eternal.’
Daugavpils, boasts a historical center of national architectural significance and is the second most populated city in the country. It serves as a hub for culture and education in eastern Latvia.
The initiative was the first in a series of IP-related, awareness-raising activities which will take place locally over the next two years in the newly certified Authenticity. The focus will extend to younger people through various activities for students, including design competitions, echoing the success of similar initiatives in the authenticity of Liepaja.
