On 28 february 2023, under the framework of the European Cooperation Project (ECP8) ‘European Network of Authenticities’, the municipality of Liepāja became the first certified Latvian ‘Authenticity’. During the kick off media event the Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Director of the Latvian Patent Office, Agris Batalauskis, and the Chairman of the City Council of Liepaja, Gunārs Ansiņš.
Liepāja is a city in western Latvia, located on the Baltic Sea. It is the largest-city in the Kurzeme Region and the third-largest city in the country after Riga and Daugavpils. It is an important ice-free port.
It is known as a city rich in deep cultural and historical traditions, and has a very important place in the cultural landscape of Latvia and the region. Liepāja is home to both state and municipal institutions, as well as the University of Liepāja and privately funded artistic groups and departments.
The city has a remarkable legacy in terms of its historical cultural environment, buildings, monuments, visual art collections, museums and libraries
In particular Liepaja is home to examples of the Art Nouveau style of architecture on a European scale. There are dozens of Art Nouveau buildings in the city, which in absolute numbers is more than in other European cities.
Liepāja was chosen as the European Capital of Culture in 2027.
